What a bow thruster really costs installed.

Planning ranges by boat size and type, what moves the number, and a live estimator. Real quotes come from looking at the real boat.

Quick answer

A tunnel bow thruster typically costs about $5,000–$9,000 installed on boats under 30 feet, $8,000–$14,000 on 30–40 footers and $11,000–$18,000 on 40–50 footers. Retractables cost roughly double. Haul-out is extra.

Where the money goes

  • The thruster: usually the biggest single line. Thrust, voltage and proportional control drive the price.
  • Labor: layout, cutting, glassing the tunnel in, fairing, wiring and testing. Often two to four skilled days.
  • Tunnel and materials: tunnel tube, resin, cloth, fairing compound.
  • Power: dedicated battery, charger, main fuse, switch and heavy cable. Lithium costs more up front.
  • Controls: one panel is standard; second stations and wireless remotes add.

What pushes the number up

  • Cored hulls (the core has to be cut back and sealed around the tunnel).
  • Tight forepeaks that make access slow.
  • Long cable runs if a battery cannot sit near the thruster.
  • Hydraulic systems on larger yachts.
  • Paint and gelcoat matching on show-quality hulls.

How to save without cutting corners

Combine the install with a scheduled haul-out. Do bow and stern together if you want both. Pick the right size the first time: upsizing later costs far more than buying right. And do not skimp on cable and battery; that is where cheap installs lose their thrust.

Questions people ask

Why is labor such a big part of the cost?

Cutting a hole in a boat and making it stronger than before takes time: layout, cutting, laminating the tunnel in, letting it cure, fairing, then wiring and testing. Most of that is skilled glasswork, not bolting on parts.

Is the haul-out included?

Usually not. Haul, block and launch are billed by your yard and vary a lot by region and boat size. If you are due for bottom paint, schedule the thruster install at the same time and pay for one haul instead of two.

Does a bow thruster add resale value?

It makes a boat easier to sell, especially to buyers who dock short-handed. Most owners recoup part of the cost and sell faster, but it rarely adds dollar-for-dollar value.
